The pattern is almost always the same. A site feels heavy, the owner contacts the hosting provider, and within five minutes an upgrade is on the table. The next month the bill has doubled and the site is exactly as slow as before.
The reason is simple: in most cases the server is not what is slow. A server only sends what is asked of it. If what is asked is twenty images of four megabytes each, thirty JavaScript files from plugins nobody uses any more, and six typefaces pulled from three different domains, no server on earth gets out of sending all of it.
Test it yourself before believing anyone. Open PageSpeed Insights, enter your address, and scroll to the very bottom — the list of largest files. The answer is usually sitting right there: one banner photo nobody ever resized, or one plugin loading its entire library on every page when it is used on exactly one.
Three fixes that almost always move the needle, and not one of them needs a bigger hosting plan. First, convert every image to WebP and cap its width at the size it actually displays — a photo shown at 800 pixels wide does not need to be stored at 4000. Second, deactivate the plugins you do not use rather than merely hiding them. Third, turn on page caching so the server stops rebuilding the same page for every visitor.
When is an upgrade genuinely the answer? Once all three of those are done and the site still labours at peak hours, or when your provider can show you that the resource ceiling is actually being hit. Outside of that, upgrading just moves the same problem onto a larger invoice.
